Start With a Complete Chain and Drivetrain Assessment


Before any adjustment is performed, the entire drivetrain should be carefully inspected to understand its current condition and identify the actual source of any performance problem. Check the Chain's Movement Through the Drivetrain


The chain should move smoothly and consistently as it travels around the chainring, through the rear derailleur, and across the cassette. During inspection, the drivetrain should be rotated carefully while observing whether the chain moves naturally or whether there are sections where it hesitates, jumps, rubs, or moves sideways in an unusual way. A healthy chain should articulate smoothly at each link and should follow the intended path without excessive resistance. Irregular movement may indicate a stiff link, contamination, incorrect adjustment, worn components, damaged teeth, or another drivetrain issue. Watching the chain while it is actually moving can reveal problems that may not be obvious when the bike is stationary.
